Epic Games has revealed a new opt-in exclusivity program that allows third-party developers to keep 100 percent of the profits from newly-released titles for a limited time in exchange for exclusivity.
The new initiative — known as the Epic First Run program — will allow participating developers to keep all of the profits from new releases launching on or after October 16 this year for a full six months. Once this period has passed the revenue split will return to the regular split, which sees 88 percent of revenue go to the developer, and 12 percent to Epic.
In exchange, companies who opt-in to the program will be prohibited from selling their games on competing storefronts, including Valve’s Steam Store during the six month run. A game will also be ineligible for the program if it had previously been offered on another third party digital storefront.
That being said, the deal does not prevent developers from selling through their own first party digital store, or from using Epic’s keyless redemption program to sell through Epic partners like Humble Bundle or GOG, and creators will be free to sell their games on other third-party storefronts once the six month run is over.
The program will be available to developers “of any scale”, and will grant participating titles a number of perks designed to increase exposure, such as allowing them to benefit from inclusion in “relevant store campaigns”, and being featured prominently on the Epic homepage.
Epic’s latest initiative is part of an enduring effort to attract new developers to the store, preferably as exclusive partners. Back in March the company launched a suite of new self-publishing tools designed to help creators and publishers release their games onto the digital store in a more seamless fashion. Epic has also made efforts to court users via the Epic Rewards program, which allows users to earn back 5 percent of a purchase back in rewards, and can be applied for future discounts.
