A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Lauderdale, Newton, Neshoba, Kemper, Winston, Noxubee, Scott, Smith, and Leake until 6 PM Tuesday.
Rain will ease after midnight tonight. Occasional showers will remain possible through midday Tuesday before more widespread heavy rain returns Tuesday afternoon and evening.
THE NEXT 24 HOURS
Heavy storms have primarily focused on areas north of I-20 throughout most of Monday. The storms are losing some of their energy, but they can still bring heavy rain as they begin to shift focus a little farther south toward I-20 and south of I-20 through midnight tonight. While the flash flood threat is still present, the overall threat for severe thunderstorms appears to be easing back. An isolated severe storm can still bring a damaging wind gust or two.
FLOOD THREAT
The flash flood threat will temporarily subside tonight, but it will increase again Tuesday afternoon. Runoff from the heavy rainfall and flash flooding that occurred Monday will fill the rivers, many of which are already overflowing. Flood Warnings are in effect for the Pearl River near Philadelphia, the Chickasawhay River at Enterprise, the Tombigbee River from the Bevill lock to Gainesville to Demopolis to Coffeeville, the Sucarnoochee River at Livingston, and the Noxubee River at Macon. If a river near you is not currently flooding, flooding is still possible.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE LATE WEDNESDAY THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY
Our next weather maker is a developing storm system that will bring a threat of severe thunderstorms around midweek. We've said the threat is for Wednesday, but realistically it's a late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning threat. A line of storms will track through East Mississippi and West Alabama between midnight and 1 AM. There are indications the storms will be weakening, which would favor damaging winds. Still a tornado or two can't be ruled out. Widespread heavy rain will bring a continued threat of flash flooding, too.
