Converted Homes Bring the ‘Cool Factor’ - The Wall Street Journal

If you’re looking for Sid Riggs’s home, keep an eye out for the steeple. Five years ago, the musician bought a Methodist church in Pittsburgh that he and his then-girlfriend, Brenda Stumpf, converted into a home and workspace.

The church’s rectory is now an art studio, its reception hall is a recording studio and the living space is where Sunday school likely was held. Mr. Riggs, now single and moving to Tucson, has listed the property for $1.35 million.

“There’s a cool factor,” Tim Durkovic, Douglas Elliman broker associate and president of the Durkovic Group, says of homes that have been converted from churches, factories, firehouses schools and other uses.

Mr. Durkovic represented the buyers on the 2019 sale of a 7,760-square-foot Pasadena home that was once a seismology lab at Caltech used by scientist Charles Richter, creator of the Richter scale.

In 2003, Shawn and Bethany O’Neill bought a 10-acre estate on Bainbridge Island in Washington that had housed the operational command center for the U.S. Navy’s North Pacific Fleet during World War II. The structure, built in secrecy in 1941, was where messages were decoded. It was converted by a previous owner into a 12,000-square-foot, four-bedroom home, now listed for $9.75 million.

One issue: thick walls. “Every DirectTV person or CenturyLink person that walks in that hasn’t been here before spends a lot of time scratching their head about how to make something work,” says Mr. O’Neill.
