As a disciple of Mike Holmgren, and, by extension, Bill Walsh, Kansas City’s Andy Reid came up in the West Coast offense where the quarterback performs almost like an NBA point guard, using short passes that playmakers can turn into long gains.
Tampa Bay’s Bruce Arians has relied on the mantra “no risk it, no biscuit” as he wants to quarterbacks to take chances downfield even if it sometimes leads to mistakes.
The approaches may be diametrically different but both have been successful. Reid and Arians have consistently run prolific offenses that have helped the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers reach the Super Bowl.
But Reid and Arians reached title game because both coaches have also shown the ability to adapt. Reid has gradually used more shotgun and spread formations over the years, helping Patrick Mahomes develop into the game’s top QB.
Arians has altered his offense a bit this season in Tampa Bay to cater to Tom Brady’s strengths, incorporating more motion and a few more shorter passes to go along with the deep strikes that remain a staple.
“If you’re not looking for new things every year, you’re falling behind,” the 68-year-old Arians said. “You can look at what some other people do. But if it really doesn’t match your personnel, it’s not a fit for you.”
Arians has been helped out by having Byron Leftwich call the plays. Reid is heavily involved with designing and calling the offense in Kansas City even if he does lean on coordinator Eric Bieniemy as well.
There are plenty of differences in the two offensive philosophies, but they can be boiled down to two key statistics from SportRadar that sum up how the passing games thrive.
The Bucs led the NFL this season with 42 completions that traveled at least 20 yards downfield, while the Chiefs ranked 14th with 26 deep completions this season.
But Reid’s offense creates space, and Kansas City led the league by gaining 2,447 yards after the catch as Mahomes took advantage of playmaking ability of players like Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. Tampa Bay ranked 17th with 1,874 yards after the catch.
Small party in Tampa: The scene around downtown is still bustling, though smaller-than-usual for a Super Bowl week. Whether from the area or out-of-towners. people are happy there’s a Super Bowl to celebrate even if the party isn’t as big as usual.
The NFL Experience, an interactive theme park, drew a moderate but enthusiastic crowd Friday, with everyone required to wear face masks to get in. However, restaurants, local business and hotels aren’t seeing the usual high traffic of patrons expected during a Super Bowl week.
Downtown Tampa isn’t a ghost town, by any means. But:
“There’s usually like 10,000 people milling around,” said Paul Smith, a resident of Thurmont, Md., who has traveled with his son Montgomery to several host cities. “This year, there’s like nobody here.”
According to TicketIQ, the average list price to see the Super Bowl in person has been trending down recently and is sitting at $8,310. Still, there are just under 1,700 tickets available on the secondary market, with the cheapest costing $5,290.
Brady facts: For all of Brady’s success in the Super Bowl — he has an NFL-record six rings — his resume has a gaping hole: The quarterback has yet to account for a first-quarter touchdown. Brady and his former team, New England, managed a first-quarter field goal in 2018 against Philadelphia. Goose eggs in the rest of their Super Bowl appearances (2002, ’04, ’05, ’08, ’12, ’15 , ’17 and ’19). ... Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne has the most completions (828), yards passing (9,715) and touchdown passes (87) in University of Michigan history, well ahead of Brady (443, sixth; 5, 351, ninth; 35, 10th).
Injury report: The Chiefs and Buccaneers will head into the Super Bowl relatively healthy.
The Chiefs ruled out left tackle Eric Fisher because of a torn Achilles tendon and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. due to knee and ankle injuries, but neither was expected to play. Tampa Bay did not list anybody as out on its final injury report.
The only Chiefs player to be listed questionable is wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who has not played since sustaining a calf injury in Week 16 against Atlanta, but Reid said he’s good to go. Chiefs running back Darwin Thompson did not practice Friday because of an illness. The defending champions are also waiting on the status of wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and backup center Daniel Kilgore, both of whom landed on the COVID-19 list as close contacts of the team barber; they could play if they continue to return negative tests.
The Buccaneers listed wide receiver Antonio Brown (knee) and tight end Cameron Brate (back) as questionable, but both are expected to play.
