Not only will there be issues of warmth and sunlight lost to the residents on the north side of the proposed five-story condo building, there are other issues as well. How will water be distributed to the new households and the current residents in the area? Will more water-rationing take place and will water bills go up? For how long and how much noise will the building process create?
More light pollution harms human health by interfering with the human circadian rhythm and decreases production of melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep, boosts the immune system and lowers cholesterol. More traffic and noise for the neighborhood. Fire stations are not equipped to fight fire on a five-story building. More costs and the need for new, better equipment. Approval will set a precedent to allow these kinds of impacts to the quality of life in Santa Cruz.
