Megan started the Rochester Clothing Exchange on Facebook back in October. She says it is a way for people to post what they might need. She wanted to start this Facebook group because she knows what it's like struggling to make ends meet, “I have two little girls myself. I know what it's like to be a single parent trying to live off one income. There's more and more need for people in the community that need help,” Goettl said.
So Megan's on a mission. She takes this work seriously. Her home is filled with clothes. She picks up clothing from another team member of the group at her home in Rochester. Then back in Stewartville, she organizes it for people who need it most. Whether that's shoes, sweatshirts or jeans, "We go through every single piece by hand. Once I get someone that needs help, I go through and get them the sizes they need,” Goettl said.
The Rochester Clothing Exchange has almost 1,000 members on Facebook, "There's so many people that have a hard time reaching out and we're truly there for them,” Goettl said.
One of the people who received help from Megan shared with ABC 6 News her experience. She is a single mom of two children and the money she earns only stretches so far. This mom says she received a winter coat for her kid. She also shared that she was able to connect a family member of hers who wanted to help another family at her church. She says she reached out to Megan and within a day had a full box of clothing to give to the family.
She spread the word about Megan and was able to help another family through her.
Another woman says Megan's help warmed her heart. She was able to get clothes for her 8-year-old stepson.
As for future plans, Megan hopes she can expand her group even more, "I'd love to have a storefront and have it all setup so that people can come in and shop by appointment,” Goettl said.
A heart of gold with a will to help others in any way, "Everything is between us and that person,” Goettl said.
