Cubs bring back outfielder Cameron Maybin originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

The Cubs are bringing back outfielder Cameron Maybin on a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Chicago on Friday night.

Maybin, 34 in April, came over from the Tigers ahead of the 2020 trade deadline in a deal for minor-league infielder Zack Short. He appeared in 18 games, hitting .250/.304/.365 in 56 plate appearances with five extra-base hits with five RBIs.

Maybin is a well-respected veteran with postseason experience, winning the 2017 World Series with the Astros. He's versatile, capable of playing all three outfield spots.

The Cubs currently have four outfielders on their 40-man roster (Jason Heyward, Ian Happ, Joc Pederson, Phillip Ervin) and also agreed to a big-league deal with Jake Marisnick. With his experience, Maybin could be a favorite for a spot on the Opening Day roster as a backup outfielder.
