Unsettled winter weather should close out the week in Massachusetts, with a long-lasting snowstorm on the way.
The Bay State is expected to be hit with as much as 6 to 8 inches of snow from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening, with Eastern Massachusetts being impacted the most by the winter storm, according to the National Weather Service.
By the time the storm’s over late Friday, 6 to 8 inches of snow will have fallen across much of the Cape and Islands as well as in Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Plymouth and Bristol counties, the weather service said.
The rest of the state - including the Berkshires, much of the Pioneer Valley and most of Worcester and Middlesex counties - will see closer to 4 to 6 inches of snow. Lesser amounts, 3 to 4 inches, should hit areas closer to the border of Western and Central Massachusetts east of Interstate 91, according to forecasters.
A winter weather advisory has been issued for the entire state that will last from noon Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday. Forecasters are predicting difficult driving conditions due to snow-covered roads.
“The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute,” the weather service said. “Slow down and use caution while traveling.”
The weather service noted it issued a winter weather advisory instead of a winter storm warning due to the long duration of the meteorological event. The agency’s criteria for an advisory is 3 inches of snow in 12 hours, while its criteria for a warning is 6 inches in 12 hours.
Forecasters said to expect “some very light snow or flurries” across southern New England early Tuesday. By the afternoon, the steady precipitation from the north-moving storm should become light to moderate, impacting the late day commute in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Accumulating snow will begin to fall as early as 2 to 4 p.m. along and south of the Massachusetts Turnpike, expanding to many areas north of the highway by 4 to 6 p.m. Northern Berkshire, Franklin, Worcester, Middlesex and Essex counties won’t see the steady winter precipitation until 4 to 9 p.m., according to meteorologists.
Hourly snowfall rates aren’t expected to exceed 0.5 inches per hour. On Thursday, snow totals of 1 to 2 inches across the southeastern part of the state, along with a low probability of isolated 3 inch amounts, will be sufficient for snow-covered roads to impact the late day commute near the Rhode Island border, including in Fall River and New Bedford as well as in Hartford, Connecticut and Providence, Rhode Island, the weather service said.
Still, the long length of Thursday and Friday’s storm, coupled with its light snowfall rates, will make it a manageable winter weather event, forecasters noted.
Ocean-effect snow bands may develop and come onshore in Eastern Massachusetts late Thursday, enhancing the precipitation’s intensity a bit across this region, according to the weather service. Nevertheless, snowfall rates will be “very light,” limiting additional totals overnight to an inch or two region-wide.
“[We] may see some spotty light freezing drizzle at times. In addition, mid-level warming may be sufficient for some sleet to mix in at times along the south coast,” the agency said.
Periods of mainly light winter precipitation are forecast again Friday morning. Snow may become steadier late in the day, and an additional inch or 2 overall is expected, with up to 3 more inches possible over Eastern Massachusetts, according to meteorologists. The late day commute should be impacted.
Light snowfall should last through the evening and move offshore overnight, with a drying trend overspreading the state from west to east. Dry but cold conditions will return this weekend, the weather service said.
Massachusetts may see another period of snow Monday that could mix with or change over to rain near Rhode Island, according to the agency. However, the forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.
