2021 crane migration to bring more tourists than last year - KSNB Local 4

KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The annual Sandhill Crane migration is in full swing now and despite the pandemic causing some restrictions, more tourists are making their way to central Nebraska to see the special event.

With visitor centers and blinds closed, crane viewing is in the hands of the public this year. After two years dealing with either flooding or the start of the pandemic, the state wanted to make sure people didn’t miss the cranes.

“The Crane Trust has really worked with the Nebraska Flyway in the Tri-City area and all the way to North Platte to really bring road viewing opportunities and where the best spots are, or what county roads are safe to pull off the side of the road without going on private property,” Crane Trust President Brice Krohn said.

Places like Crane Trust or the Rowe Sanctuary are providing virtual crane tours for those who don’t want to go out. They also have some special features for their paying members since revenue is down.

“For the Crane Trust, it’s our main fundraising season so it’s really the period of the year that really helps fund our operating costs throughout the year,” Krohn said. “It’s really worrisome that we can continue to do what we’re doing with the staff. We have to showcase everything in the mission to everyone without the funding support.”

The Kearney Visitors Bureau said they are getting a ton of calls about the migration, so they expect numbers to be better than 2020.

“We have normally about 42,000 people come and visit the cranes every year and so that number will be off a little bit this year but we still think the economic impact is going to be significant,” Kearney Visitors Bureau Director Roger Jasnoch said. “Normally we have about $14 million deposited in our economy because of the cranes during that six week period.”

As for the birds themselves, the migration was delayed due to the late February freeze. Now peak numbers are being seen early in the season. This week the official count is about 460,000 cranes in central Nebraska.

The Crane Trust said people can expect to see hundreds of thousands of more birds through tax day. They encourage people to pick up those maps or download them to get out to safe places to pull off on the road to get a view on the migration.
