Storms leave behind damage, bring down trees in Alabama - WSIL TV

(CNN/ABC) -- In Alabama, a large tornado touched down just southwest of Birmingham Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

In the Eagle Point subdivision of Shelby County,  at least one house was reduced to rubble while roofs and second stories were missing from others.

The Pelham Police Department says the twister ripped through their city's civic complex and the Crosscreek Community. In nearby Helena, there are also reports of major damage, with high winds knocking out phone lines and power for thousands of customers.

But the potential for several weather threat Thursday does far beyond the Birmingham area.

The National Weather Service says more than 50 million people are at risk of strong storms through Thursday night.

The severe weather risk extends from the central gulf coast through the Ohio River valley.

The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings for Alabama and Mississippi.

No injuries have been reported thus far, but forecasters said conditions were ripe for “long-track strong tornadoes.”

On Wednesday, heavy rains saturated the ground in southwest Mississippi, causing a large tree to topple over onto a mobile home, killing a woman inside.
