MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A community activist is fighting food insecurity one fridge at a time.
The organization is called 901 Community Fridges. The idea is for people to stock the outdoor fridge, so people in need can take food home.
“It’s for anybody,” L.J. Abraham said. “It’s open and available 24/7 for people to drop off food and pick up food.”
Abraham came up with the idea in January.
One fridge is tucked in the back of First Congregational Church in Cooper Young.

“We have families who have kids at home,” said Abraham. “Their hours are being cut from work. They can’t afford to buy food for their kids, and those kids are home all day instead of getting those meals from schools.”
The organization is quickly growing. On Friday, a second fridge will be placed at the Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton. The area is considered a food desert.
“Just having something like this in a neighborhood where people who may work for the service industry or who may have kids at home having access to fresh food,” said Abraham. “I think it’s an incredible and amazing community project that we are all working towards.”

Abraham said her goal is to put 20 fridges around the city. Right now, the group has 8 fridges and plans on announcing its third location soon.
“This is something happening all over the country, and I think Memphis is really benefitting from it at this point,” said Abraham.
You can come by drop off food any time. They even have a pantry for canned food and other non-perishables.
Abraham hopes this movement will convince city and county leaders to put grocery stores in areas labeled food deserts so people won’t need the fridges.
