A blustery day brought an increased risk for serious fires across the state Sunday and the high winds are expected to return Monday along with an arctic front bringing windchills below zero.
A red flag warning is in effect for all of southern New England, except those areas still covered with snow, until 8 p.m. due to strong northwest winds and low relative humidity, meaning any fires that start may spread rapidly and be hard to extinguish, according to the National Weather Service.
A wind advisory is also in effect until midnight for most of Massachusetts, according to the weather service.
In Boston, the highest recorded wind gusts Sunday afternoon were less than 35 miles per hour, but gusts near 50 are possible in the later afternoon and evening, forecasters said.
According to the Boston fire department, high winds caused a Dorchester three-decker fire to spread to the roof of the building next door Sunday afternoon.
A total of 23 residents from the buildings at 14 and 18 Harvard St., were displaced, the department said on Twitter.
Winds may have played a role in power outages across the state, with 1,224 customers without electricity as of 4:45 p.m., according to the Massachusetts Emergency Management.
There were scattered rain and snow showers across the state Sunday afternoon, although in most places the precipitation was evaporating before reaching the ground, according to the weather service. Squalls began in Dorchester and Cambridge at about 3:30 p.m. Less than a tenth of an inch of precipitation is expected in the cities.
An arctic front is expected to move in overnight, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures, according to the weather service. After reaching a high of 48 degrees just before 2 p.m., temperatures began a slide downward toward an expected low of 13 overnight and an expected high near 27 on Monday.
The wind is expected to amplify the impacts of the cold, bringing windchills to minus 2 overnight and minus 6 on Monday, with gusty winds expected to continue, forecasters said.
