MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shawn Danko still remembers the glory days of the Mud Island Amphitheater, thriving with shows, crowds, and business for downtown.
“If we go back to 2008, 2009, there were a lot of events going on at the amphitheater at that point and they were definitely great for downtown,” Danko said. “They were filling people up, filling restaurants up with people and hotel rooms. There was a lot of action as a result of the amphitheater.”
The outdoor venue has been quiet in recent years, with the last concert happening in 2018.
But, thanks to Mayor Jim Strickland signing off on $4 million for its restoration, the glory days could be coming back.

The Downtown Neighborhood Association formed a “Save the Amphitheater” Committee last year to bring awareness to help bring the venue back to life.
Danko, who owns the Kooky Canuck, said the presence of a smaller event center has been missing.
He said the amphitheater’s return will add more entertainment options and much-needed businesses to downtown.
“We figure maybe another eight or ten million on top of that,” he said. “That gets everything going. That gets the entrance, the trolly that goes from front to the island itself going and it gets the amphitheater itself completely functional.”
Danko already envisions what the first show back at the venue could look like.
“I’d love to see all the Memphis acts from far and wide come to Memphis and kick that thing off,” he said. “There’d be nothing better. With the backdrop of Memphis behind the stage and seeing Memphis artists, I think that would be spectacular.”
