HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - Recovering from pandemic lock downs have been harder than expected for many local businesses, but the challenge isn’t bringing in customers. Instead it’s bringing on new staff.
When businesses shut down during the pandemic, workers either found other jobs or are still just relying on unemployment. Now the lack of people of applying for work is starting to put a strain on local businesses.
Jamison Murphy is the owner of Murphy’s Wagon Wheel in downtown Hasting and he told Local4 they’ve been struggling recently with a very limited staff.
“It’s just a difficult time right now and hopefully we can bounce back with people wanting to get jobs again,” he said. “We are just trying to stay open. Being open 50 years and continuing what we do. It always helps with more people than less.”
Murphy said despite trying to find work for all of his employees during the pandemic, he did lose quite a bit of them and not everyone came back.
“It is very difficult right now to provide the service Murphy’s normally would on a regular basis because we can’t fulfill some of those spots,” he said.
So why are people hesitating to get back to work? Some recruiters believe it may be due to the incentives on unemployment.
“Getting incentives like that, it’s hard to beat for some people,” Associate Staffing Marketing Manager Paige Kirlin said. “I also think clients are going to transitioning to a way when looking for people to also start offering some incentives to get people back in the workforce.”
Another reason some people could be opting out of returning to work is the fact that there is still an active pandemic and a lot of unknowns.
“Some people are still scared to come back because of the COVID,” Kirlin said. “If you’re getting the vaccine, I think we’re going to start seeing people more willing and open.”
