Bring It On Is Getting a Slasher Movie Spinoff at SyFy - Screen Rant

Cheerleader franchise, Bring it On, is getting a slasher horror movie spinoff on SyFy. The 2000 cheerleading film, Bring it On, starred Kirsten Dunst, Gabrielle Union, Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford. The teen movie was a hit upon its release, grossing over $90 million at the box office, and went on to spawn five direct-to-video sequels and a Broadway musical. Each sequel contained a new cast and storyline, with stars like Hayden Panettiere and Ashley Benson in the leads.

The first Bring it On followed two rival high school cheer teams as they prepare for a national cheer competition. Cheer drama ensues when Rancho Carne High School Toro's new captain, Torrance Shipman (Dunst), finds out that their former captain stole all of their routines from the East Compton Clovers, headed by Isis (Union). The film is beloved for being ahead of its time and featuring fun and impressive cheer routines. Most of the films that followed in the franchise followed the formula of rival cheer teams preparing for a competition, though the original 2000 film still remains the most successful of all the movies. Now the seventh film in the franchise is coming, and it's going to look a lot different than the previous movies.

In announcing their lineup of new shows and films 2021-2021, SyFy revealed a scary new installment in the Bring it On franchise. Titled Bring it On: Halloween, the spinoff will air in 2022 and will keep to the theme of a cheer team preparing for a competition, but with a spooky twist. The official synopsis reads, "Held down by restrictive rules, an embattled cheerleading squad seeks the freedom of a creepy, closed school gym to practice for regionals, but when members of the squad start to disappear, the cheerleaders must unmask their assailant to save themselves."

Bring it On: Halloween is produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment and will be released on non-theatrical platforms next year. While this is the latest installment in the franchise, Union confirmed last year that a Bring it On sequel will happen with the original cast. Dunst and Union also participated in a virtual Bring it On reunion, along with writer Jessica Bendinger and director Peyton Reed, where they spoke about the film's impact 20 years later and what the sequel would look like whenever it comes out.

While not much more is known yet about Bring it On: Halloween, such as cast details or an exact release date, it's clearly taking a much different turn than its successors. It's also the first film in the franchise that will not be a comedy, instead more in the teen-slasher genre. It will be interesting to see how this movie will look, but it seems like it could work as there have been past cheer horror movies like 1988's Cheerleader Camp and 2001's All Cheerleaders Die. It's certainly a new and creative take on the franchise.
