OXFORD, Miss. — A new noise ordinance in effect for the city of Oxford affects everything from music at residences to businesses.
FOX13 found out the hope is that the new process to get “amplified music” at events or venues gets a lot simpler.

Oxford’s Barbara Gates said she hopes that the new noise ordinance by the city will bring more music, both live and recorded to events and venues, in the city of Oxford.
“Really in town, it’s never been so loud as to disturb people. As long as it stays in those guidelines, I think it will be great,” Gates said.
Under the old ordinance, organizers of events or business owners have to get a permit for music. However, under the new ordinance, as long as it is under certain decibels that are acceptable at certain hours, they don’t need a permit.
Oxford’s Nygel Knott said the new ordinance wouldn’t do anything but good for the city.

“I believe the city has a lot of growth and development and I think that would make a lot of things possible for a lot of people and a lot of kids,” Knott said.
Gates agreed that it could bring nothing but positive.
“I mean our town needs people in it and it needs to be rejuvenated after the pandemic. So the ordinance for sound is not going to really affect anything. I think it will be good as business and bars it should go smoothly,” Gates said.
