Letter: Bring back real fiscal conservatism - Anchorage Daily News

Please, stop the clown car. I want off right here. It is now abundantly clear that truckloads of free stimulus money convinced low-wage service workers that they no longer need to actually have a job to participate in the economy. From restaurants, to hotels, to grocery stores and everywhere in between, no one is applying for these jobs.

Within 30 days after Donald Trump let loose gazillions, I could no longer find home health care help for my parents. No one even responded to our ads, something our family had not experienced in five years of routinely placing them. Then Joe Biden unleashed a similar torrent and made the problem worse. If you are a small service business, you know what an absolute mess we are in. Admittedly, there are no tried and true instructions for stimulating our way out of a pandemic, and both administrations no doubt meant well, but their efforts to save the stock market by giving away trillions in monopoly money cratered the labor market.

So dire is the situation, the Alaska Senate is reacting by proposing a $1,200 “bonus” for finding full-time work, or $600 for part-time. Apparently, this is a bonus of free state money designed to outbid the free federal money — to possibly move people off the couch. And just when you think things can’t get any crazier, that very same State Senate, led by Mat-Su wizards of economic enlightenment, Sens. Mike Showers and Shelley Hughes, propose more free money in the form of a $2,300 Permanent Fund dividend. Is this what a family of four needs right now, another $9,200 in free money? Many have been knocking down $5,000 to $6,000 a month in unemployment benefits between husband and wife.

Please, legislators, end the session and go home where you can’t break anything. I can’t take any more fiscal “conservatism.” Let supply and demand work. Some of us still think capitalism has merit.
