LA Clippers vow to bring more physicality against Utah Jazz; Quin Snyder says holding Mike Conley out is not a strategy - Salt Lake Tribune

They made a run … they made a couple runs. They cut into the lead, but can they get enough stops for it to matter?

The Utah Jazz had a great third quarter, finally stringing together enough good possessions to close the gap a bit on the Clippers in Game 3 Saturday night. After twice rallying within eight points, they settled for a 94-83 deficit going into the final 12 minutes.

While Utah got huge 3-pointers from Donovan Mitchell, Royce O’Neale and Bojan Bogdanovic — and were 16 of 34 beyond the arc altogether — the Jazz remained iffy defensively.

Kawhi Leonard found a groove (22 points) and Paul George remained hot (25). L.A. is shooting 52.9% overall and 14 of 29 from deep.

Jazz trail Clippers 64-49 at halftime

The Clippers vowed to be aggressive and physical in Game 3, and they have — making life difficult for the Jazz’s offense.

Utah, meanwhile, has not responded in kind, as Los Angeles got one open shot after another in the first half Saturday night, enabling the Clippers to take a 64-49 lead at the break.

Paul George scored 20 points, Reggie Jackson added 14, and the Clippers shot 52.1% from the field overall and 10-20 from 3-point range.

The Jazz were saved from a blowout only by the sudden emergence of Donovan Mitchell, who, following a scoreless first quarter, reeled off 16 straight points in the second at one point. Joe Ingles has 14, and Jordan Clarkson 11, but Utah got next to nothing from Bojan Bogdanovic (four points, 1 of 5 shooting) and Royce O’Neale (zero points, 0 for 2).

The Jazz wound up shooting just 40.9% overall, but at least went 11 of 23 beyond the arc.

Jazz start fast, slow down, trail Clippers 27-23 after first quarter

Once again, the Utah Jazz got off to a fast start offensively. And once again, they had a bit of trouble sustaining it.

The Jazz hit their first three shots on Saturday’s Game 3 in Los Angeles, for an 8-0 lead, then went 6 of 20 the rest of the period. Donovan Mitchell totaled zero points on 0-for-3 from the field — going scoreless in the first quarter of a playoff game for the first time in his career. Joe Ingles at least was hot, totaling 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Clippers, meanwhile, quickly shook off their slow start, unleashing some aggressive defense that forced the Jazz further out onto the court. They were also efficient on offense — shooting 11 of 21 overall and 3 of 6 from deep to take a 27-23 lead.

Clippers vow to bring more physicality; Quin Snyder says holding Mike Conley out is not a strategy

Los Angeles Clippers coach Ty Lue said in Saturday’s pregame meeting with the media that he didn’t envision making any huge changes with his team trailing the Utah Jazz 0-2 in their Western Conference semifinal series.

However, he did say that some minor tweaks were necessary, notably, the Clippers doing a better job with 1-on-1 defense against the likes of Donovan Mitchell and Jordan Clarkson, and with being more physical.

“Just try to make it tough, bring the physicality,” he said. “We got to keep being physical because they try to do a good job of running through our screens. So we got to bring physicality when we’re screening and [make sure] we’re hitting our bodies.”

Jazz coach Quin Snyder spoke right after Lue, and told of his comments about physicality, noted that Utah’s players would need to walk a fine line between matching it and not going overboard.

He also spoke of the need for the Jazz to be prepared for the referees allowing a different style of play, and to not waste time or effort arguing about it.

“We’ve got to be physical. That’s what the playoffs are about. And there’s ways to be physical without fouling,” Snyder said. “… The biggest thing is to not look for any outside help for that, you’ve got to really be mentally tough in those situations. And if the game is being played a certain way, you have to respond.”

Meanwhile, with injured point guard Mike Conley being ruled out for a third straight game, Snyder was asked if the Jazz’s present 2-0 series lead going into Saturday’s Game 3 played a factor in the decision to keep the All-Star on the shelf a bit longer.

The coach replied that making a decision on that basis would be the height of hubris.

“It has nothing to do with us feeling any any form of accomplishment, having won a couple of games. Mike’s not ready to go yet. He’s working hard every day to try to get back. But, in no way are we feeling even some small form of success,” Snyder said. “Obviously, you’re glad you won a couple of games, but seeing we lost Game 1 against Memphis last series, and the Clippers obviously lost against Dallas and then won the series — we know how difficult a series this is going to be. And when Mike’s ready, he’ll be back.”
