Gov. Pillen vetoes bill that would allow for needle exchange programs in Nebraska - KOLN

sutitong.blogspot.com

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Governor Jim Pillen vetoed a bill on Monday that would have allowed safe syringe exchange programs to be developed in Nebraska.

Legislative Bill 307, introduced by Senator Megan Hunt of Omaha and passed by the Legislature on a vote of 30-7-12 last week, would have allowed local jurisdictions to authorize community-based syringe services programs, known as SSPs or needle exchange programs, which facilitate the safe use and disposal of syringes, according to the Nebraska Examiner.

Lawmakers voted Thursday to approve legislation for the distribution of hypodermic needles to reduce the spread of infectious diseases in Nebraska.

Pillen vetoed the bill on Monday, calling it “problematic for several reasons.”

Below is a copy of Pillen’s complete veto letter.
