BROOK PARK, Ohio – Parking violators in Brook Park who have unpaid tickets can take care of their financial obligation by participating in a special exchange program that begins today.

With 3,000 tickets yet to be paid, the possibilities for making a positive community impact are significant because offenders may simply exchange canned goods or new toys to wipe their slates clean.

The Brook Park Parking Ticket Holiday Exchange Program, being offered by the police department, will be in effect through Dec. 17. People seeking to clear their debt must bring items to Brook Park Mayor’s Court from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The court is located at the recreation center, 17400 Holland Road.

All donations will be given to local food pantry Audrey’s Outreach.

Here is how it works:

If the violator has only one outstanding parking ticket, five canned goods or one new boxed toy can erase that obligation.

Ten canned goods, or two new boxed toys, can absolve a person who has two unpaid parking tickets.

People with three or more unresolved parking tickets have a Deter Block on their vehicles and registration, which means they cannot renew their license plates. The cost to remove that block usually is $60, but it will cost only $30 and 10 canned food items to clear it.

To check for any outstanding parking tickets, go to ohioticketpayments.com.

Brook Park Police Patrolman Trenton Brown spoke to cleveland.com about the new program, calling it “a way to do something really great for the community.”

“Berea is doing a similar program, so we brainstormed and thought it was a really good idea,” Brown explained. “We figured this would be a good way to help out Audrey’s Outreach.

It has been a godsend for the community by distributing food on a regular basis,” he added. “With COVID hitting and people struggling right now, we think this is a really good opportunity for us to help the food bank.”
