Disneyland to bring back ‘Fantasmic,’ ‘World of Color’ and Main Street Electrical Parade in 2022 - OCRegister

Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will bring back a host of fan-favorite nighttime entertainment in 2022 that has been sorely missing from the Anaheim theme parks since they returned from a 412-day pandemic closure.

“Fantasmic,” “World of Color” and the Main Street Electrical Parade will return in 2022 as part of a phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, according to Disney Parks chairman Josh D’Amaro.

D’Amaro made the announcement on Saturday, Nov. 20, during the Destination D23 fan convention at Walt Disney World in Florida.

The COVID-19 pandemic put fireworks, nighttime spectaculars, parades and live shows on hold during the phased reopening of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure due to the large crowds they attract. Since the parks reopened, Disneyland has brought back fireworks in time for the Fourth of July and resumed the first parade as part of California Adventure’s Oogie Boogie Bash in early September.

D’Amaro announced “Fantasmic” will return to the Rivers of America at Disneyland and “World of Color” will return to Paradise Bay at DCA in 2022 — without mentioning a specific return date.

“Fantasmic” and “World of Color” went into hibernation during the 13-month coronavirus closures of the Anaheim theme parks and have not shown any signs of life in the nearly seven months since Disneyland and DCA reopened in late April.

Extensive fountain refurbishment has taken place on “Fantasmic” with work continuing on “World of Color.”

The Main Street Electrical Parade will be back in time for the 50th anniversary of the beloved nighttime parade.

The Main Street Electrical Parade will celebrate its 50th anniversary in summer 2022. The parade debuted at Disneyland on June 17, 1972.

Since the 1972 Disneyland debut, the parade has done stints at Disney California Adventure, Florida’s Magic Kingdom, France’s Disneyland Paris and Japan’s Tokyo Disneyland. The most recent appearance of the Electrical Parade at Disneyland was in the summer of 2019.

Disneyland famously held a heavily-promoted farewell season in 1996, promising the Main Street Electrical Parade would “glow away forever.” But much like the farewell tours by rock bands like Kiss, Motley Crue and the Eagles, farewell never means goodbye forever.
