A Chicago police officer was wounded and a 26-year-old man was killed in an exchange of gunfire Thursday evening in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.
Gunfire erupted while officers were near a car they pulled over at about 6 p.m. in the 3800 block of West Ferdinand Street, Chicago police said in a statement.
The wounded officer was shot in the wrist and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. Four other officers who weren’t shot were hospitalized for observation, police said.
Dexter Reed suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:32 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
Several officers fired their weapons, and the other person's gun was apparently emptied, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.
More than 50 rounds were picked up by the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system, according to records shared with the Sun-Times.
Parts of the shooting were captured during frantic police radio transmissions: "Shots fired," an officer screamed. "I'm shot! I'm shot!"
"We have an officer shot in the arm," a dispatcher radioed minutes later. "They have a tourniquet applied."
Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling addressed the shooting at a meeting of the Chicago Police Board later Thursday, saying he hoped the officer makes a speedy recovery.
“They are out there working hard, trying to keep the streets safe, and as a result of that was injured," Snelling said. "But the officer, it sounds like, will be OK.”
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information should call 312-746-3609.
