TAMPA — Masks are becoming as necessary as boarding passes for travelers heading to Tampa International Airport.
Delta, United and JetBlue on Monday began requiring passengers to wear masks aboard their flights. Frontier will follow suit on Friday. Masks will be required starting May 11 by American, Southwest, and Florida-based Spirit Airlines.
Allegiant, the dominant airline at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, said it provides passengers with a single-use mask, non-latex gloves and two disinfecting wipes as they board.
Requiring the masks is meant to track the U.S. Center for Disease Control’s recommendations about using cloth face coverings in public settings to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Spirit said in announcing its policy over the weekend. Passengers will be expected to supply their own face coverings. Children who cannot keep a mask or cover-up on will be exempt from the requirement.
