Notre Dame to Bring Students Back to Campus Early - The Wall Street Journal

Notre Dame isn’t the first to announce that it intends to bring students back for the fall semester, but its language is more definitive than others.

The University of Notre Dame will bring all students back to its Indiana campus to start the next academic year two weeks early, a high-stakes decision schools across the country have been wrestling with and students and parents have been nervously anticipating.

Students will arrive at Notre Dame in South Bend the week of Aug. 10 and will finish the semester before the Thanksgiving break. They won’t return to campus until January. The schedule is designed to limit travel off campus in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Covid is a risk but there is also a risk for failing to educate young people who will be our leaders of tomorrow,” Notre Dame’s president, Father John Jenkins, said. “There’s a risk both ways but we think we can handle this in a safe way.”

The decision comes a week after the California State University system announced that it wouldn’t bring students back to campus in the fall, except for a small number of students participating in hands-on learning experiences. The University of California system said it wasn’t likely to bring students back in the fall and would conduct classes remotely.

Notre Dame isn’t the first to announce that it intends to bring students back for the fall semester, but its language is more definitive than others and it is unusual in that it is moving the start date up, rather than pushing it back. The University of South Carolina on Sunday announced plans to bring students back to campus on Aug. 20 and have them leave before Thanksgiving and take final exams online.

Purdue University, also in Indiana, announced last month that it intends to bring students back to campus to start the fall semester.

All three schools have large football programs but it isn’t clear whether a season will be held.

“I can’t answer that definitively, it depends on the national scene and that’s something we don’t control,” Father Jenkins said. “But the thing about teams is that you can keep them pretty contained and test them pretty regularly so it seems to me you could find a way to make sure they’re safe.”

If circumstances change and an outbreak pops up this summer, the early start date could still be scuttled, Father Jenkins said. Details of how often students would be tested, whether older faculty or those with pre-existing conditions would teach in person classes or even if students will wear masks, have yet to be settled.
