An argument between two friends in a southwest Birmingham apartment early Monday left one dead and another hospitalized.

Birmingham police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Serviced responded about 3 a.m. to Forest Hills apartments on Tempest Drive on a report of a person shot. When officers got to the apartment, said Sgt. Rod Mauldin, one man was unresponsive on the living room floor and another was outside wounded by gunfire.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation indicates that the men and some other people were at the location when an argument ensued. Both men, he said, shot each other.

The surviving gunshot victim was taken to UAB Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.

Dozens of friends and family members, including the slain man’s mother and father, came to the scene as word quickly spread about the loss of their loved one. The fatality victim’s father, Patrick Watson Sr., identified the fatality victim as his son, 29-year-old Patrick Watson Jr.

According to family, Watson Jr. was a father of four kid ages 5 to 18. His wife also has four children. Three of Watson Jr.’s children are believed to have been in the apartment at the time of the shooting. They were taken to a neighbor’s apartment after the shooting.

“He loved his kids. He spent a lot of time with his kids,’’ said Watson Sr. “He was a good guy.”

“You never know. They were supposed to best of friends,’’ he said. “But most of the time that’s how it is - it’s not an enemy, it’s somebody you know. It shouldn’t have even come to this.”

The deadly shooting came less than 12 hours after another man was killed, also in western Birmingham. That shooting happened about 5 p.m. at Nu Vision car detailing shop on Bessemer Road.

Watson Jr.’s slaying is Birmingham’s 48th homicide this year. Of those, five have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 72 homicides, including the 48 in Birmingham.
