Sips and steps to bring a sense of summer to life - Boston Herald

Pre-coronavirus, this was a big travel time for me. Three years ago I was relishing the amazing island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. One year I was exploring surfer towns and jungles in Costa Rica. And just a few years back I was skiing Wildcat (there’s still snow on the trails there now). This year? It’s a different world right now.

So what’s a warm-weather seeking, social distance rule following, I’ve-held-out-long-enough-for-summer-thank-you type of New Englander supposed to do? Sure, gazing at the photos from those past escapes from New England Mays helps a little. But let’s admit it: We need more.

So this week, still hunkered down at home, I’ve diving into summer. Hope — and summer (and travel!) — springs eternal. So I’m going to savor those summer vibes by embracing some of my favorite products. I’ll use them now, and dream of warmer days, summer sun and, yes, a time when once again we can hop a plane and find our warm when we need it most: in the chilly days of a New England May.

The Painkiller cocktail experience: The best way to savor a Painkiller, the signature drink of the British Virgin Islands, is on the deck at the famed Soggy Dollar Bar, where (legend claims) 1970s owner Daphne Henderson invented the cocktail as a way to quickly recover from a night of island fun. The exact recipe she concocted has never been shared, but creators of Pucker’s Rum, the only true choice for a Painkiller, have worked out what they believe is as close to the original as one can get.

I’m a huge fan of signature drinks, and I always order them on the road. They don’t always live up to the hype, but the Painkiller does. And that means that even sipping it sitting in that one ray of warm sun in your yard or, if need be, inside while showing photos of the BVIs on your flat screen, the taste will transport you.

The cocktail is easy to make (and the ingredients are available in most packies). Four parts pineapple juice, one part each orange juice and cream of coconut, then add in the level of Pucker’s Rum you feel you need (BVI folks ask for a one, two, three or, the strongest, four shot), shake it all up and pour then top with nutmeg. Trust that combo. As you sip it, you can imagine sitting beachside at the Soggy Dollar. Or frolicking in the BVI’s famed baths. Or doing the things folks love best there: chartering a boat, diving, fishing or just hanging out at the beach. BVI has even posted a tutorial on the drink here: facebook.com/watch/live/?v=2657071151243743&ref=watch_permalink. You can learn more about BVI for your future May escapes here as well: bvitourism.com. Mix it, shake it, sip it and be transported.

Stock up on this season’s best sunscreens: There is something about picking out all my sun protection products for the summer season that just makes me feel warmer. I love a good skin product, and when I find a great one that’s also a sun protector, I’m in heaven. This year, I’ve discovered Raw Elements (rawelementsusa.com) and I’ve stocked up on all I’m going to need for those upcoming sunny, warm days.

Why stock up now? Well, first, if you are like me, every time the temp goes above 50 and a sliver of sunlight appears, I’m out there. And our skin needs protection now. Remember: Our skin has been inside and protected way more than usual, and it could be extra sensitive. Plus, it’s fun. My new sun products always make me feel … summery.

Why Raw Elements? Their products (designed by a lifeguard, who would know better?) are good for our skin, our overall health and the health of the earth. It’s natural, organic and non GMO. The packaging is environmentally conscious. It doesn’t run off you and pollute the water (anyone who has snorkeled at a busy tourist destination has seen the results of other sunscreens). There’s tinted and non-tinted, products just for lips (even ones with color and powerful sunscreen protection) and for kids and babies. You can choose your sunscreen in a classic tube, a tin, spray or a stick. The scent is natural and in no way overpowering, and the feel of the product is just right: light but effective. I ordered my bundle for the summer, and I’m putting it on whenever I head out into my yard. Summer sunscreen? Check. Shorts and flip-flops have to be coming soon.
