OCEAN CITY, Md. – Local boats stole the show at the 2020 White Marlin Open in Ocean City this past week.
For the first time the tournament was held for seven days, so it’s fitting that a number of firsts took place.
The top prize of the week for locals went to Canyon Blues, a boat out of Ocean City, who reeled in a 97-pound White Marlin on Saturday. That fish was good for a $1.5 Million payout. The angler is Brandon Golueke from Chester, Maryland. The Marlin that was caught by the Canyon Blues was the third-largest in the 47-year history of the White Marlin Open.
That’s the third largest white marlin ever brought to the scales. That 97-pounder topped the competition by 20 pounds.
Drillin and Billin from North Carolina brought home a 77-pound White Marlin that netted them a $1.6 Million prize.
The Sentient brought in a 121 pound Tuna Thursday, valued at $85,000. That vessel is out of Slaughter Creek, Md., the angler is Frank Whirley, from Cambridge.
The second place fish was a 114.5-pounder for the Restless Lady II, out of Ocean City, worth $900,000.
The Magic Moment from Oxford in Talbot County takes home the Wahoo category, reeling in a 60.5 pound fish. Angler Mark Hutchinson and crew bringing in that fish worth $20,000.
Tail Chaser from Frederick coming in a close second with a 57-pound Wahoo.
The Seacurity, an Ocean City, Md. boat, took home third place in the Dolphin division behind North Carolina-based Hatteras and the Jenny Poo from Florida.
There were no qualifiers in the Blue Marlin or Shark categories.
A few other notes from the 2020 White Marlin Open include the first Swordfish weighed in. And the tournament saw two in one day on Saturday.
The Hatteras, who took home the top spot in the Dolphin category, caught the largest Mahi in tournament history, at 73.5 pounds.
Awards will be handed out Monday afternoon.
