N.J. weather: Remnants of Hurricane Laura to bring heavy rain, gusty winds to state this weekend - NJ.com

Keep your rain gear handy, New Jersey. More batches of showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the state late Friday and much of the day on Saturday, as the remaining moisture from Tropical Depression Laura merges with a low pressure system and heads our way.

Although the showers that arrive Friday afternoon and Friday evening are not expected to be widespread, some strong thunderstorms could pop up and dump heavy rain or cause isolated wind damage, forecasters from the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters say the threat of severe weather will be greater on Saturday, when bands of showers and embedded thunderstorms move across the Garden State. Some of those storms, triggered by a cold front, could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain because the remnants of Laura will add tropical moisture to the atmosphere.

Forecasters say the remnants of Tropical Depression Laura will merge with a low pressure system and bring pockets of heavy rain and thunderstorms to New Jersey on Saturday, Aug. 29. In addition to pockets of flash flooding, “some thunderstorms could be severe, with locally damaging winds the main threat,” the weather service’s Mount Holly office noted in a hazardous weather outlook issued Friday.

The bottom line: The first half of the final weekend of August is not shaping up to be a good one for outdoor dining or working on your tan at the Jersey Shore. However, Sunday is expected to be a decent summer day, with lots of sunshine and temperatures hovering in the upper 70s to low 80s.

The one drawback to Sunday is the expectation of gusty winds blowing in the Garden State as the storm system races towards southern New England and eastern Canada.

Laura slammed into Louisiana as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Thursday, packing 150 mph winds and leaving a wide path of destruction in its wake.
