Tucson police shot an armed man on Saturday following an exchange of gunfire, officials said.
At about 11 a.m., two officers responded to a mobile home park near Behan Street and Country Club Road for reports of an occupied stolen car, Tucson Police Department spokesperson Pete Dugan said. The three people inside the vehicle fled when police arrived.
Dugan said at least one person in the group fired multiple rounds at officers as they chased after them. Officers did not know the men were armed until the first shots were fired.
At least one officer fired back and struck one of the armed men, Dugan said. Officers attempted to aid the wounded man and were able to take the other two into custody.
The injured man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives later recovered an assault rifle and a handgun from the scene. It's not clear which gun the man who was shot was carrying.
In a tweet, Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus posted a photo of the two guns, adding "You can see why (the officers) returned fire. ... What kind of insanity is this?"
Magnus said no officers were injured.
"I'm grateful beyond words that our officers are uninjured," Magnus said on Twitter.
