The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services is encouraging Alaskans to use candles, lanterns, headlamps and flashlights to help brighten Alaska in a moment of celebration, reflection and solidarity at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The event, “Bring Back the Light,” is organized by the Department of Health and Social Services along with statewide partners. The Anchorage Museum is participating by installing ice luminaries on its lawn to represent Alaskans who have died with COVID-19.
Officials reminded participants to remain physically distanced from non-household members.
“During this pandemic, Alaskans have shown considerable strength to adapt and take care of themselves and each other,” the state health department said in a statement. “Each light from every Alaskan will represent brighter days to come, literally and figuratively. It’s intended to celebrate Alaskans’ resiliency, as well as remember Alaskans lost to COVID-19.”
More information about the event can be found on the event’s Facebook page or on the state health department’s website, which includes directions on how to make an ice luminary. Participants are encouraged to share photos and videos on social media with the hashtag #WithYouAlaska.
