The new year will potentially be celebrated with messy, icy weather in Massachusetts late Friday.
A wintry mix of snow and sleet is expected to hit the commonwealth Friday night, mainly impacting areas northwest of the Boston-to-Providence, Interstate 95 corridor. Northern Massachusetts and higher terrains should also be particularly affected, according to the National Weather Service.
One to 2 inches of snow and sleet is forecast across much of the northern half of the state, while less than an inch is expected throughout the southern half, the weather service said. Mainly rain is forecast across southeastern New England.
Although snow and ice amounts are expected to be on the lighter side, slippery travel is expected, the federal agency noted. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for the entire state days ahead of the storm.
“A brief period of snow is possible, but the main concern is for freezing rain and sleet before precipitation changes mainly to rain by daybreak Saturday,” the weather service said. “While icing amounts will be on the light side, it only takes a small amount to result in hazardous travel.”
Some showers will linger Saturday morning, but the weather should be dry by the afternoon, according to meteorologists. The forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.
