TAMPA — Police officers and a man who has barricaded himself into a motel room in East Tampa have exchanged gunfire in a standoff that has stretched more than 17 hours.
Neither the man, whom Tampa police identified as 44-year-old Renardo Bucklon, nor officers were struck.
The hours-long confrontation began just after 3 p.m. Thursday after two men got into a “physical altercation” that escalated until Bucklon fired a gun, police said. The second man — whose identify police have not released — was not injured and called officers.
When police arrived, they found Bucklon barricaded in a room at the Roadway Inn at 2904 Melburne Blvd., near where N 50th Street and Interstate 4 meet. They tried, unsuccessfully, to convince him to leave the room, leading to the standoff.
At about 9 p.m. officers heard a gunshot from inside. They approached the room to check on Bucklon and he shot at the officers, striking their ballistic shield, police said. No officers were injured and they retreated.
Later, police tried to flush Bucklon out of the motel room by sending in a chemical irritant. He didn’t come out, instead firing his gun several times inside the room.
By 1 a.m., officers again approached the room to peer in and implore Bucklon to surrender. He was in the bathroom and fired at the officers, who this time shot back. Nobody was hurt.
Bucklon remained in the motel room as of 8:30 a.m. Friday. Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies were called in to relieve the Tampa police officers.
State prison records show Bucklon has been incarcerated five times. He has been convicted of drug crimes, fleeing officers and aggravated battery, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
