Houston Rockets guard James Harden and rookie Jae’Sean Tate reportedly had a heated exchange in practice on Monday, which resulted in the eight-time All-Star throwing a basketball in the direction of Tate, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Of course, Harden requested to be traded from the Rockets over the offseason and reported to training camp a week late. Harden intended on keeping the relationship professional amid his trade request, but tempers have boiled over this week just before the start of the regular season.

Harden, who is said to be a mild-mannered player in practice, has had multiple verbal altercations with teammates this week leading up to the situation with Tate on Monday. Some within the Rockets organization believe the events this week are a result of growing frustration with his current situation.

The situation will be worth monitoring over the course of the season, but the Rockets reportedly have no intention of trading Harden at this point. Harden has the next two seasons guaranteed on his contract with a player option during the 2022-23 season for $47,366,760. Houston holds all of the leverage in any potential trade situation and potential suitors have failed to present a trade package worth accepting to this point.

Tate, who played last season with the Sydney Kings in the National Basketball League, signed a three-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Rockets in November. He logged three appearances with the Rockets during the preseason, averaging 3.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and one assist in 15.3 minutes per game.
