Sadly, it was Hettinger-Scranton pulling off the upset by dominating the fourth quarter and pulling out a 64-51 victory, ending the Buccanneers' chances of returning to the state tournament, which they haven't been to since 2014.
While the team now has to move on without its star player in Oech and seniors Andrea Lund, Jenna Hildebrant and Rachel Bosserman, the Buccaneers are looking to prove they are still one of the top teams in the region, as well as potentially battling for the Class B Region 7 championship in February.
"It’s always tough losing seniors, but we bring back a lot of juniors from last year that are now seniors that will really help us out," Goldberg said. "Plus we have another four juniors as well, so we’re looking at 10 upperclassmen this year. That should make the transition as smooth as it could possibly be, I guess."
The team will be looking for senior guard/forward Megan Rising to lead the team during this season and take big strides to help bring success to the Beach basketball team. Rising was named an All-Region player in the '19-20 season.
Beach will also be looking toward seniors forward Kennady Myers, center Molly Farstveet and forward Alyvia Braden to be strong leaders in the post for the team throughout the season.
As for guard play, Goldman said the team will be looking at sophomore point guard Tyra Feldman to run the team and will be assisted by junior shooting guard Laiken Mahlum who is known for hitting key jump shots throughout her career.
"I think the biggest thing for opponents is that we are a complete team, "Goldberg said. "We are a team. We have three or four really good posts and for any one of them it could really be their night and they could go off."
While Goldberg joins every coach in the nation in trying to keep the entire team safe and healthy in the midst of the pandemic, he also is hoping to just get a chance to play in the regional tournament come the end of February.
"Usually I would love to be one of the top seeds in the region, but this year it’s just impossible to know how it’s going to turn out, so the goal is to be able get to and play in the tournament, no matter what seed we are," he said.
Overall, Goldberg's main goal this season is to enjoy it with his team and especially his six seniors.
"I’m so happy that they’re allowing us to have this season, because these seniors they’ve been chomping at the bit for their whole basketball careers just for this year," he said. "I’m really excited to be able to watch them and just to have the happiness that they get from playing the game. That’s what I’m most looking forward to.
"We're going one day at a time and trying to not take the season for granted," Goldberg added. "I love this team. I love coaching for Beach. I’m so thankful for being able to do what I get to do. Every day in the gym is just a blessing."
Beach is scheduled to play its first game of the season at home against Beulah on Monday at 7 p.m.
