GOWANUS, BROOKLYN — A pair of Brooklyn restaurateurs are planning to bring new life to the corner space that once housed critically-acclaimed Freek's Mill.
Ryan Angulo and Ian Alvarez — from local favorites French Louie and Buttermilk Channel — won approval from Community Board 6 last week for a liquor license at the 285 Nevins St. spot, which has been vacant since Freek's Mill closed last year.
The approval brings the duo one step closer in their plans to open a new restaurant in the space early next year. The eatery, to be named Victor, will aim to bring a new go-to spot to southern Gowanus.
"It really lends itself to a neighborhood restaurant," Alvarez told the board's licenses committee. "It seems like there isn't too much of a larger, moderately-priced place which would be a good neighborhood restaurant, so that's really the space we're hoping to fill."
Angulo is best known as co-owner at French Louie in Boerum Hill and Buttermilk Channel in Carroll Gardens, which he runs with Doug Crowell. Alvarez, who has also worked as an executive chef in the East Village, has worked with Angulo as the chef de cuisine at both Brooklyn restaurants.
The pair will collaborate on the menu at Victor, which will include a wood-burning oven, reasonable prices and an "approachable" wine, beer and cocktail selection, Angulo told Patch.
"We are both chefs, so we will be creating original dishes drawing inspiration from the pan-Mediterranean coast, mostly France, Italy and Spain but also Greece, North Africa and the Levant," he said.
The new spot will include a makeover to the 1,200-square-foot space. Angulo and Alvarez took over 285 Nevins St. in June and have spent October and November working on "turning over the space," they told board members.
When it's done, Victor will include a bar area upfront and larger tables in the back. A sidewalk cafe is also a possibility, but the duo are holding off on applying given the changing outdoor dining scene, they said.
Their application drew only a few concerns from neighbors, who said the space has had problems with noise in the past. Angulo and Alvarez said they plan to replace large French doors with windows to help contain the noise and will put up signs asking customers to be "good neighbors."
"Any noise inside of the restaurant, which would be normal restaurant-level noise, will be kept inside without any leakage out onto the sidewalk," Alvarez said.
Final approval for the Nevins Street liquor license rests with the State Liquor Authority.
Alvarez and Angulo said the hope is to open Victor in February 2021.
