Bring Awareness To Bullying - The Chattanoogan

When we post on social media we should consider the fact that our kids will see it. Posting on social media is no different than saying it verbally, and I would like to think that we would all be kinder with our words. I am not saying that we have to always rise above and that we should not say what is on our minds at times, but if we expect our kids to do better, then do we not have to try to at least set a better example for them?

"The Social Media Upheaval' by Glenn Howard" is a good read if you want to have a little more insight of the dark world of social media and where we are headed.

Even though kids have been out of school during the pandemic we should not assume that bullying has decreased, bullying has many faces. and now we have to be concerned about cyberbullying/cyber harassment.

Though there are no laws to protect someone from bullying, there are federal laws that protect against harassment.

Cyberbullying or cyber harassment is a form of bullying using electronic means.

If you have any questions regarding bullying you can contact the office of safe and supportive schools at 615-741-3248.

The data on the number of reported cases in Tennessee was updated in December 2020. According to TN.gov for the 2019-20 school year there were a total of 8,590 bullying cases reported in Tennessee. "Out of those reported, there were approximately 3,917 that were confirmed cases after an investigation."

250 cases were confirmed to involve race, color, or national origin.
597 confirmed cases involving sex or gender.
176 confirmed cases involving disability.
757 confirmed cases involving the use of electronic technology
Pending cases 126

Then we have the numbers for each school district.

Out of 149 school districts in the state of Tennessee that were on the list, the top four districts with the highest number of total cases of any type of bullying, and again these numbers are the cases that were reported, not all were confirmed cases.

Shelby County-1015, and this school district is the largest in the state.
Knox County-630
Metro Nashville Public Schools-517
Hamilton County- 455

Now, we have to consider the total number of students in these districts, verses the school districts with the lower number of cases, and their student population. There are many things to consider when we look at these numbers, and my goal is not to target these districts as being the worst, my goal is to bring awareness to bullying.

We tend to stand silent, until something bad happens and our voices are forced to be heard. That is not my style and I prefer to speak when it is not a hot topic, otherwise I am only jumping on a bandwagon and repeating what everyone else is saying.  "Be a voice not an echo."

Practice makes perfect and that means that we have to have an open line of communication with our kids, where they will feel safe to come to us, and that means that we have to regularly remind ourselves and our kids from time to time about these things.

Lining the school hallways with anti-bullying posters is not enough.

And with the use of technology and virtual learning, we will have to dig deeper and find ways to identify bullying on a different level.

"Solutions to bullying are not simple. Bullying prevention approaches that show the most promise confront the problem from many angles. They involve the entire school community- students, families, administrators, teachers, and staff, such as bus drivers, nurses, cafeteria, front office staff, and SRO's. Adults can prevent bullying by talking to children about bullying, and encouraging them to do what they love, modeling kindness, and respect, and seek out help."

CDC of Education released the definition of bullying in 2014, and that is listed as follows.

Unwanted aggressive behavior
Observed or perceived power imbalance
Repetition or high likelihood of repetition of bullying behaviors

According to the Tennessee Department of Education this behavior falls under what is  considered to be of bullying nature.  Bullying can lead to aggressive behavior later in life which teach our young ones to be kind to others, and that is not only done by the words that we speak, but more importantly by the example that we set, words are meaningless if not followed by actions. It seems that we can not always expect adults to lead by example, so I say to the young one's we can learn by the example that you set also.

What separates each one of us, is not the color of our skin or the religion that we practice, it is how we treat others, and the kindness that we show to those that need it the most.

We are all different in one way or another, and there is no "normal" way to look or appear. Just be you, and be the best you can be, not all of the time, but most of the time, and that is speaking to myself as well.

We do not always have to have a smile on our face, because we do not always feel like smiling, but even though we may not be at our best, that does not give us the right to be unkind or rude to others that did nothing.

Standing by and doing nothing when you witness it makes you a participant, so please tell someone if you know of any type of bullying or hazing going on.
