Massachusetts’ next winter storm is expected to bring ice, ‘very slick’ roads - Boston Herald

The very active stretch of wintry weather in Massachusetts is set to continue this week, as a storm Monday night into Tuesday is expected to bring freezing rain and dangerous icy conditions to the region.

Forecasters are closely watching the track of the storm system that has the potential to deliver significant ice accumulations to the Bay State.

It appears the “bullseye” for ice accumulation will be in the central and western portions of the state, said National Weather Service meteorologist Torry Gaucher, based in the Norton office.

“We’re definitely going to be keeping a close eye on this,” he added. “Any shift in the track of 10 to 20 miles could really change where the ice accumulation will set up.”

The heaviest precipitation is expected to be late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Much of central Massachusetts is forecasted for 0.25 inches to 0.50 inches of ice accumulation.

“That will definitely make the roads very slick,” Gaucher said. “Even when they’re being treated, the roads will be a bit of a mess.

“If you can work at home, it’s definitely the day to do it, and stay off the roads,” he added. “For essential employees who do have to go into work, give yourself a lot of extra time. Take it slowly.”

Any icing threat also brings the possibility for power outages and tree damage.

Meanwhile, as the central part of the country faces a deep freeze and record-breaking cold, New England will see seasonable temps in the 20s and 30s over the next few days.

“We’re definitely not going to see the colder temperatures from the Midwest make it to our neck of the woods,” Gaucher said.

In North Dakota, wind chills were hitting 50-below over the weekend.

The National Weather Service office based in Duluth, Minnesota tweeted on Sunday, “We have broken the #record low for this date at Duluth. Previous record was -24 in 1875, 1879, 1949, and 1970. We have achieved what those years couldn’t. -26 °F!”

Following the ice cleanup on Wednesday in Massachusetts, another winter storm is expected to arrive Thursday into Friday with snow transitioning to ice and rain.

“It’s likely another impactful winter weather event,” Gaucher said.

Friday’s temperatures are expected to climb all the way into the 40s.
