Marvel’s Avengers, Bring Me Pictures Of Spider-Man - Forbes

Today is an anniversary of sorts for Marvel’s Avengers, as a year ago today it was announced that the game would be getting Spider-Man as an exclusive hero for PlayStation players only.

That was a controversial news item before the game launched a few weeks later, but soon Avengers would run into larger problems that would need to be fixed over the course of many months, delaying all their content plans, Spider-Man included.

A year later, we have heard nothing official about Spider-Man outside of comments I and others have managed to extract from them in a handful of interviews, and I think it’s time to start sharing more, given that it has quite literally been a year since he was announced.

It does stand to reason that all of the Avengers’ focus is currently on the War for Wakanda expansion, due out two weeks from today, and starring Black Panther. The day before that there is a Wartable about the expansion, and it’s possible a further “year 2” roadmap will be shared, given that the launch of that expansion is the end of year one.

Here’s everything we know about Spider-Man based on the limited information we’ve been given:

  • Spider-Man is not cancelled. He is still being worked on as we speak.
  • There is nothing to indicate Spider-Man will not remain PS-exclusive, as originally planned, even if that does not exactly seem like what the game needs at the moment.
  • It’s been indicated to me that Spider-Man will indeed be the next hero released after Black Panther, and should arrive before the end of 2021.
  • No matter whether War for Wakanda succeeds or fails and what is or is not greenlit for future Avengers content, Spider-Man essentially has to happen because of the original deal with Sony.
  • By the time Spider-Man arrives, there may be some sort of “catch-up” mechanic to a certain extent to avoid the interminable 50/150 level/gearscore grind for new character. But this is not happening for Black Panther.
  • As previously said, this is not Insomniac’s Spider-Man or Peter Parker from the hit PlayStation game, this is not a shared universe with that series. It is unknown who is voicing Spider-Man for Avengers at this time. Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Yuri Lowenthal, does voice Spider-Man across other media, so he shouldn’t be ruled out, even if this is not the “same” Spider-Man.

That’s about all I’ve got here. Obviously Crystal Dynamics is in a weird spot, because the game needs more content for all its platforms right now, not just PlayStation, even if that may be the largest, but this is a deal they can’t exactly extract themselves from now, and it’s clearly ongoing, given Avengers being featured on PS Now and such.

I am very much looking forward to the Black Panther expansion, but Crystal Dynamics will have an almost impossible task with Spider-Man, given how well received everything about Insomniac’s version is, and how fun he is to play. How do you top that?

Anyway, that’s the latest Spidey news. I don’t expect any more until right before or after Wakanda releases, at the earliest.
