High pressure over the Pacific Northwest will keep skies clear and help temperatures warm through the weekend.
The National Weather Service says temperatures will approach 67 degrees in Portland but could warm to close to 70 in a few spots along the coast. This is due to building high pressure and a thermal trough along the Pacific. East to northeast winds will be strong across the region Tuesday with gusts of up to 30 mph likely during the afternoon.
High winds and lower humidity will also create hazardous fire conditions. The Oregon Office of Emergency Management is reminding residents to take extra caution with any outdoor fires during this time. The weather service says extra care will be needed at least through midweek when burning any slash piles or yard debris. Even though April isn’t Oregon’s typical fire season, a forecasted mostly dry month will allow smaller fuels to dry out more than during an average spring. Never leave outdoor fires unattended.
The weather service has also issued a blowing dust advisory warning of limited visibility and hazardous driving conditions in the Washington lower Columbia Basin and the Blue Mountain foothills. The advisory area also includes sections of Interstate 84 near Hermiston and Pendleton. Patchy blowing dust is also expected in areas of central Oregon. The advisory is in effect 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday. Drivers should use extreme caution and slow or prepare to pull off the roadway to avoid driving into a dust storm. Never stop on the road.
In Portland, winds will continue to gust through the afternoon with up to 40 mph expected in the higher hills and closer to the Columbia River Gorge. Winds should begin to die down by the evening.
Wednesday will be sunny with calm winds. The high temperature is likely to reach nearly 71 degrees.
Temperatures continue to climb as we head toward the end of the week. Thursday’s high will be near 75 degrees under sunny skies, and Friday and Saturday temperatures will reach toward the 80s.
