Rileigh White, an East Syracuse Minoa High School student, has been on the fence. She didn’t have a junior prom last year and, as much as she missed it, she might skip this year’s senior ball.
After juniors and seniors were denied a dance last year because of the Covid-19 shutdown, school administrators are committed to restoring the tradition this spring.
But waltzing around Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s restrictions is making these dances a little strange, which is why students like White aren’t so sure about this year.
No outside dates, even from another grade in the school. Masks at all times except when eating or drinking. Social distancing on the dance floor: Stay 6 feet apart! Limits of 150 people inside or 500 outside. Covid testing or vaccines for those attending.
It’s nobody’s idea of a party.
Although Cuomo eventually removed the odd rule that people had to dance in pods or with those they came with, some schools haven’t decided yet if they’ll even have dancing. And many wonder about the details of how dancers have keep a social distance. How can you slow dance six feet apart?
The limits on indoor gatherings also are pushing some schools to host outside events, or juggle the event at staggered times or in two different rooms.
For White, not being able to bring a date from outside the senior class is the most frustrating.
“I don’t understand why you can’t bring a date if you have to have a vaccine or Covid test,’' she said. “How do you take those senior ball photos without your date there?
“It’s all going to be awkward,’' she said.
Jamesville-DeWitt High School will have both its junior prom and senior ball outdoors on school grounds with a giant 40 foot by 80-foot tent the district has rented, said Paul Gasparini, principal. The event is June 16 and 17.
There will be a DJ. Students have to wear a mask, and provide a negative Covid test or vaccine. There’s no formal dinner, Gasparini said. The school is looking into food stations or a food truck.
“It’s going to be hard, but the kids are really excited to have the dance,’' he said.
The ESM High School senior ball will be held at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel, and if too many attend, they will have to split into two rooms.
Students were going to have to wear color-coded wristbands, and dance in the area marked for their wristband color, but t it looks like that will change.
Parent Kitty Houghtaling, whose son, Gavin, is a senior, finds all the restrictions daunting and a bit ridiculous.
“If kids are vaccinated and/or being required to have a negative Covid test, I personally see no reason why outside dates can’t be allowed to attend. It’s a little silly,’' she said.
Onondaga Central Schools Superintendent Rob Price said his school will have its ball June 19 at Arlington Acres in Fabius, with a 100-acre farm and a 2,500 square foot barn that can accommodate up to 200 guests.
Cicero North Syracuse High School has scheduled its senior ball for June 11 at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. There are so many students that they have to pick one of two sessions: 5 to 8 p.m. or 9 to 12 a.m. The school has reserved two ballrooms as well to accommodate social distancing.
“We’re trying to leverage the kids’ excitement about being able to have an event this year,’' Gasparini said.
