The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has updated its rules and regulations, answering such questions as to where to camp, what to bring and if guests can campfire.

Every National Park Service site has rules and regulations that govern its establishment, use, and how the site works with the laws of the state where the site sits physically. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area sits on the Delaware River with land bordering portions of both New Jersey and Pennsylvania (including Northampton County, Monroe County and Warren County). That means the site is governed by both federal and state laws about outdoor recreation, fishing and hunting, and even such things as metal detecting and digging, which are illegal activities at Delaware Water Gap.

A major document, known as the Superintendent’s Compendium, dictates activities allowed at national parks. The rules include what the park superintendent has designated are critical for the site to operate with safety, recreational opportunities, and preservation for the future in mind, while at the same time conforming to the laws of the state and the federal government.

The entire CFR is available electronically here.

Chief Ranger Eric Lisnik said being aware of the rules and regulations is a good place to start when planning a trip to the park.

“Knowing what is allowed and where you can go to do certain activities is an important part of having a safe and fun national park visit,” Lisnik said, noting guests should be checking the park’s website for the latest updates and information before visiting. “... whether you’re coming from down the road or across the country.”

Kara Deutsch, chief of resource management and science at the park, said some of the most beautiful places to visit are also among the most fragile environments in the park and are easily damaged by trash, human waste, overuse and misuse.

“We ask all visitors to follow the rules and regulations when visiting so that these special areas can remain as they are for future generations of visitors to also enjoy,” she said.

Park superintendents additionally are required to compile in writing all the designations, closures, permit requirements, and other restrictions imposed under discretionary authority. The compilation is updated annually and made available to the public upon request.

Those interested also can contact the superintendent’s office at 570-426-2418 to request a hard copy.
