Alabama has the potential to get a lot of rain from a tropical storm developing in the Gulf of Mexico.
It’s not Tropical Storm Claudette yet, but the National Hurricane Center expects that to happen later today as the system heads northward toward the Gulf Coast.
Landfall is expected late tonight or early Saturday in Louisiana.
But this is a lopsided system, and forecasters expect most of its worst weather to be on its eastern side -- possibly far away from where the center comes onshore.
The first of the rainbands were moving onshore on Friday morning:
A tropical storm warning continues for all of Alabama’s coastline, including Mobile Bay.
Alabama has the potential to see up to 8 inches of rain or more, both along the coast and inland, from the storm through the weekend. (That’s an increase from earlier today)
Here’s a look at what Alabama can expect by region.
SOUTH ALABAMA
Coastal Alabama is in line to get the most and worst weather from the Gulf storm.
The weather will go downhill today with the worst of it expected later tonight into Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.
A tropical storm warning continues for the entire coast, including Mobile Bay.
The National Weather Service in Mobile said the primary threats will be very heavy rain and flooding, with 6 inches or more expected.
Heavy rain will be possible along the coast starting this afternoon but will be more likely from tonight through Saturday night, according to the weather service.
Six to 8 inches of rain will be possible, with isolated areas possibly getting up to a foot, according to the weather service.
A flash flood watch is in effect for all of southwest Alabama through late Saturday. Another flash flood watch for the southeast corner of Alabama will last until Sunday evening.
There will also be the risk of seeing some quick-hitting tornadoes in rain bands as they move inland. The Storm Prediction Center has a small part of southwest Alabama in a marginal risk (Level 1 out of 5) for severe weather today:
All of southern Alabama will run the risk of seeing tornadoes on Saturday as well as the system moves farther inland:
Along the coast there is also a high risk for rip currents. The National Weather Service in Mobile said a high risk will continue through Monday night for the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches.
Winds will also be gusty at times, both along the coast and inland. Gusts of 40-50 will be possible along the coast and gusts of 30-35 mph will be possible farther inland, the weather service said.
CENTRAL ALABAMA
Central Alabama could see 3 to 4 inches of rain from the storm as it moves inland, according to the National Weather Service in Birmingham.
Forecasters were watching the first rainbands move inland to the south on Friday:
Flash flooding will be possible in areas generally south of Interstate 20, and a flash flood watch is in effect.
Forecasters will be on the lookout for tornadoes on Saturday in the southeastern part of the region. There will be a marginal (Level 1 out of 5) risk for severe weather on Saturday for the southern part of central Alabama.
The tropical system is expected to move out by Sunday, but lingering tropical air could set off additional rain and storms through the first part of next week, the weather service said.
NORTH ALABAMA
North Alabama could end up being out the outskirts of the tropical system, according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville.
Forecasters said they’re not ready to remove the risk of heavy rain from the forecast entirely, but the current track may keep the bulk of it farther south.
Forecasters said areas south of the Tennessee River and east of Interstate 65 will be the areas to watch for heavy rain.
A few storms will also be possible, but severe weather isn’t expected.
The highest rain chances will be on Saturday night into Sunday, the weather service said.
Temperatures will be lower than what’s typical for this time of year, thanks to the tropical airmass that will be in place, but expect humidity levels to be high.
That “air you can wear” will also keep the chances for rain and storms in the forecast through Monday, forecasters said.
