WARETOWN, NJ - Holy week and Easter came again this year as it did the year before. The only difference is this year, people are struggling with COVID-19 which has shut down churches and forced people to stay home. As a result, there was no Palm Sunday Service, no Good Friday Service, no Easter Service as we know it.
Additionally, it didn't seem feasible for a traditional Easter Basket Drive for families in need in Waretown and Dunfee School in Barnegat to remain in place.
Not to be dissuaded, Pastor Dawn Corlew and her worship team, of Waretown United Methodist Church located at 27 Bryant Road in Waretown, managed to bring Holy Week and Easter right to our living rooms through Facebook.
The Easter Basket Drive went on as planned but a little different and they managed to give out 70 baskets. Pastor Dawn arranged a parade of palms for Palm Sunday with the help of the congregation. She asked for videos or pictures of them waving palms or branches found around their houses. A video was created for all to view before worship started live from the church.
For Good Friday, the congregation was asked to make a comfortable place in our houses with lit candles and grape juice and bread for worship and communion. Then came Easter morning and what a beautiful service it was.
Pastor and the worship team provided a way to keep Holy Week and Easter alive complete with live music from the pianist and Praise Band members. Each of the services was ASL interpreted for the deaf or hard of hearing community. It was a great way for the congregation to feel as though we were all together.
Things have gone so well, and appreciated by so many during this time that Pastor Dawn and the members of the church continue to bring worship services to via Facebook every Sunday at 11:00am. Each week Pastor Dawn brings a message of hope and reminds us that “We will get through this!”
