The California Botanic Garden in Claremont can’t open its Butterfly Pavilion this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but that shouldn’t stop you from seeing butterflies.
Instead of going to visit the Butterfly Pavilion, you can bring the butterflies to you.
The garden has created a do-it-yourself “My Butterfly Garden Kit” for the current summer season to introduce children and their families to the world of native butterflies and the native plants they need to survive.
The kits contain blue sage, blue flax, a butterfly identification guide, and other items which when placed in on the yard, can attract butterflies such as Monarchs, Red Admirals, Painted Ladies, and other varieties.
Kristen Barker, Community Education Coordinator at the Garden said, “it helps people to still stay connected to the Botanical Garden and also helps with the native butterfly population. Plus it is a hands-on family activity.”
The kits are available online at www.calbg.org/event/my-butterfly-garden-childrens-activity-box and can be picked up at the Garden. They sell for between $55 and $85.
