Woman’s Exchange ZOOMs in on a new way to fulfill its mission - The Ledger

The Woman’s Exchange of St. Augustine’s membership gathered electronically for its 127th annual meeting and to recap an eventful year.

The Exchange’s "home" since 1932, the historic Peña-Peck House on St. George Street, was shuttered March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will reopen, with limited hours, beginning July 9.

Because members couldn’t meet as usual in the house’s gardens, President Jane Weizmann conducted the meeting via ZOOM video conferencing from her home computer.

The following officers, who were re-elected in April, were installed for 2020-2021: Jane Weizmann, president; Becky Cole, first vice president; Anne-Marie Parramore, second vice president; Pat Horn, recording secretary; Gayle Dodson, corresponding secretary; Carol Eklund, house treasurer; and Bonnie Ewing, shop treasurer. Martha Mickler, immediate past president, is parliamentarian. Margo C. Pope, a past president of the Exchange and of the Federation of Woman’s Exchanges, installed the officers.

"The Woman’s Exchange of St Augustine was founded in 1892 and chartered in 1893, so this is the second pandemic we have navigated," Weizmann said. "We have a strong mission of ‘Women helping women’ and are as vibrant and dedicated as ever to our mission."

Weizmann recounted the group’s activities over the last year.

"We held a number of successful fund-raising activities including seven fall Luncheon fundraisers, a Light Up the Night Party and a Frank Sinatra tribute dinner. Money raised from these events has helped us maintain the Peña-Peck House, provide scholarships, and support crafters whose unique creations are sold in our shop.

"We awarded 15 scholarships of $1,250 each to area women 30 and over attending St. Johns River State College, and another $1,250 for mini-scholarships to women attending First Coast Technical College. These awards are to enhance the recipients’ skills and career status," Weizmann said.

The pandemic, however, forced the cancellation of the Spring Luncheon Series.

"We are very appreciative of our 2020 Spring Luncheon patrons who overwhelmingly donated their pre-paid luncheon payments to our scholarship fund instead of seeking a refund, netting a total of $6,718."

Out of an abundance of caution, the Woman’s Exchange has canceled its 2020 Fall Luncheon series, which impacted the Woman’s Exchange Gift Shop; halted museum tours that also benefit scholarships; and canceled a Jazz in The Garden fundraising event featuring Linda Cole.

"Our successful fundraising events are supported by a team of local talent, including an event planning company, tent rental company, lighting company, catering business and a bartending service," she said. "Our members were generous in their support of these 'partners' when the pandemic shut down the hospitality industry. We were able to distribute small 'thank yous' to the 15 people whom we count on for our fundraising success."
