Mike Tate grew up in Wildersville, “and I’ve always been fascinated with the history of Pleasant Exchange,” he said to a small tour group on Saturday, May 30, 2020. Tate parked near the intersection of Old Exchange Road and Yuma Road and pointed out the probable location of the old horse racing track from the 1820’s. The Leslie family were said to be related to Andrew Jackson’s wife, Rachel Donelson, and Pleasant Exchange was a favorite spot, according to a local legend, to race his horses.

The research into the once thriving town is difficult, as the site began to die out sometime after the Civil War. Tate pointed south to an area where a gun powder mill was believed to stand, with some stories that it was visited by Forrest’s troops to replenish supplies.  Above the track, on a rise north of Old Exchange Road is a spot where the main saloon may have been, and above that a betting house for the track.
