MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - Mackinac Island has a new mantra for its visitors this year: B.Y.O.P.P.E. or “Bring Your Own Personal Protective Equipment.”
Businesses, city and tourism officials are asking island guests to be prepared this year when they leave the mainland by bringing their own face masks and hand sanitizer, as all of Michigan tries to resume traveling after the earlier statewide shut-down order sparked by the spread of coronavirus.
Mackinac Island delayed its traditional late-spring opening and now that visitors are arriving, officials there have worked for months to have plans in place to protect the health and safety of island residents, workers and visitors.
A piece of that responsibility rests with visitors.
“Mackinac Island businesses are doing everything we can to create and maintain a safe, welcoming environment for our guests — from enhanced cleaning protocols to hand sanitizer stations and intensive training on new employee processes,” said Tim Hygh, executive director of the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau. “We ask that our valued guests meet us halfway by coming prepared with personal protective equipment and adhering to our guidelines for social distancing, handwashing and wearing masks. So B.Y.O.P.P.E. and we’ll see you on the island this summer!”
Guests arriving on the island will see sandwich-board style signs - with a horse theme, of course - asking visitors to remember to wash their hands, keep a good social distance from others, and wear a face mask when they are in public spaces.
Face masks have been a big expense for some island businesses that are doling them out as a preventative measure. Shepler’s ferry officials told the Detroit Free Press that they went through 2,500 masks for passengers and staff in just the first 11 days of this season.
Like everywhere else, island businesses are adhering to new protocols. There are capacity limits in dine-in restaurants and staff have pivoted by encouraging outdoor seating and carry-out options.
Any high-touch areas in hotels and businesses are being sanitized more frequently.
“Of course, frequent and thorough hand washing is more important than ever, and you’ll find hand sanitizing stations throughout high traffic areas on Mackinac Island,” tourism staff said.
For more information about opening dates for specific resorts and attractions, see the island’s tourism website.
