SMU football plans to bring wave of players back to campus on June 15, will test for COVID-19 - The Dallas Morning News

The first large wave of SMU football players returning to campus will occur on June 15, head coach Sonny Dykes told The Dallas Morning News.

While some players began returning as recently as June 1, the program plans to integrate the roster starting on different dates.

“We’re trickling back in," Dykes said. "We’ve had a couple different waves. We had a wave that was back on Monday that was kind of more the guys that were doing rehab. And then we’ll have a bigger group back on the 15th and then a bigger group on July 6.”

The NCAA allowed resumption of voluntary workouts starting on June 1, and the American Athletic Conference allowed individual schools to determine when to resume.

The majority of the people in the earlier groups are either rehabbing players, or ones that live locally. The timeline for a return should allow for enough of a ramp-up for the NCAA season to start on time.

“That’s the goal," Dykes said. "I think we want to do it in small groups, be safe. Like anything else, there’s going to be mistakes that we make, and we want to figure out the best way to get our players back and keep them safe, and make sure that we don’t do anything that creates any kind of risk.”

While Dykes said the school is still figuring out the exact protocols, when asked if the plan was to test players, the head coach said, “Yeah, we will.”
