Two new coronavirus cases at Amazon’s Troutdale warehouse bring the total to four - OregonLive

Two more workers tested positive for the coronavirus at Amazon’s Troutdale warehouse this week, bringing the total number of cases there to four.

Amazon told Troutdale workers that one of the new cases was last at the site on Sunday, and the other was last on site Monday. The two earlier cases occurred in the middle of May, so it’s not clear they are connected to this week’s cases.

Throughout the pandemic, Amazon continued shipping packages from its warehouses around the country and workers have been increasingly critical of the company’s safety practices. Hundreds of Amazon workers nationwide have tested positive for the coronavirus and at least eight have died, according to news reports tracking the totals. There have not been any reports of deaths among Amazon’s Oregon workers.

“Our top concern is ensuring the health and safety of our employees, and we expect to invest approximately $4 billion from April to June on COVID-related initiatives to get products to customers and keep employees safe,” Amazon spokeswoman Brittany Parmley wrote in an email earlier this week.

Health experts say it’s extremely unlikely the coronavirus could be passed through packages delivered to homes.

The company says it has distributed protective gear to employees and is requiring them to maintain distance from one another. However, photos sent to The Oregonian/OregonLive by Troutdale workers show employees frequently clustered together during breaks and while entering and leaving the facility.

Amazon developed its own capacity to test employees for the coronavirus and piloted that program at the Troutdale site, a $180 million, 855,000-square-foot building that Amazon calls PDX9. It’s not clear whether this week’s cases were discovered through Amazon’s own testing.

The Portland area has had a string of workplace outbreaks much larger than the Amazon cases, all linked to food processing facilities.

The largest was at a fruit processor in Vancouver, linked to well over 100 cases last month. There have also been outbreaks at a food processing facility in Fairview and Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie.
