- Utah’s statewide health information exchange, Utah Health Information Network (UHIN), announced it is partnering with MIB, a life insurance-based health data exchange, to securely make patient data available between the HIE and MIB’s members.
UHIN connects over 6 million patient records from 1,200 providers and 50 hospitals. Spanning over all of Utah and parts of Colorado and California, UHIN has patient records from 95 percent of hospitals and 90 percent of large clinics in Utah.
“The life insurance underwriting process can be very arduous for our healthcare community,” Dr. Matt Hoffman, chief medical informatics officer of UHIN, said in a statement.
“Requests for medical records via fax, mail, and phone calls are burdensome, resource-intensive non-core functions for providers. We are excited to partner with MIB to relieve some of the administrative burden on our healthcare community and to extend interoperability for the benefit of providers and their patients.”
MIB electronically delivers patient-authorized medical information to life insurance carries. This patient data exchange helps reduce the underwriting burden for insurance companies by improving applicant experience and simplifying the application process.
UHIN said it will utilize MIB’s secured technology platforms and its applicant-authorized data process knowledge to increase its interoperability.
“MIB is proud to welcome UHIN as our newest data source providing expanded access to electronic health data in the western U.S. for our member carriers,” said Brian Millman, MIB Vice President, Electronic Health Record (EHR) Solutions.
“It's critical insurers not only have access to electronic health information, but also leverage it in a structured and meaningful way to drive efficiency and productivity in their underwriting processes. MIB EHR gives carriers a single, comprehensive, nationwide solution to electronic health record retrieval,” continued Millman.
Statewide HIEs are beginning to incorporate an array of data sets to enhance interoperability and increase awareness across respective states.
Most recently, Nebraska’s statewide HIE, NEHII, announced it was implementing behavioral health data, such as social determinants of health (SDOH) into its HIE.
The statewide HIE has partnered with Unite Us, a network of social services organizations, to create Unite Nebraska, which aims to connect health and social care providers to enhance care coordination and delivery across the state.
With this partnership, Nebraska citizens can access nutrition services, employment and benefits, and housing through community-based organizations. The two groups aim to break down existing barriers between clinical and social care providers, enabling them to provide care with trackable outcomes data.
“NEHII is delighted to back a statewide infrastructure that will enable better support to address risk areas that influence health outcomes for the people of Nebraska,” said Jaime Bland, CEO of NEHII, at the time of the announcement.
“The SDoH system we are building with Unite Us will enable the improvement of population-level health outcomes by creating a resource and referral system to effectively address social determinants such as safe housing, access to food, community-based resources, and more,” Bland continued. “This is one more value-added service available to clinicians and service providers in our state through the NEHII population health utility.”
NEHII, which connects over 70 percent of providers in Nebraska, has exchanged patient data across the state between health facilities, pharmacists, urgent care providers, and emergency rooms.
Research shows that identifying and implementing a patient’s SDOH into the EHR is crucial to finding answers to a state’s largest issues. Relevant SDOH data might include: tobacco and alcohol use, exercise, access to nutritional food, stable housing, reliability of transportation, and many more.
“There's never been a more imperative time to build statewide infrastructure than right now, during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Taylor Justice, president of Unite Us. “This partnership will enable us to help Nebraskans as they adjust to the social and economic impact of the virus.”
